Sovereignty for a strip of majesty? Souveraineté pour une bande de majesté ?

If you journey to Trout River and pop into the local Interpretation Centre, a small museum and hosting place for the popular “Passing the Time in Trout River” annual musical production, you might hear a story of a brave woman who risked life and limb to save a mother and child in a brutal winter storm. The small school that holds grades right through from primary to grade twelve is named after Nurse Jakeman who really was the Florence Nightingale of this outpost fishing village. The setting of this gripping story is a passageway between the coastal communities, Trout River and Woody Point, known as “the Gulch” or “Route 431”.

It is ironic, pardon the pun – for the hills are laden with iron and copper – that the most breathtaking stretch of hiway in western Newfoundland is also dangerous enough to keep even police and ambulance away on stormy nights. You might notice long poles marked with reflective tape along one or either side of the pavement. These are to guide the way for those who venture through on nights when the road is a sea of snow and the wind a vengeful spirit out to mesmerize and confuse the way of the winding road. Mountains may loom on either side but in the midst of the pelting hail, drifting snow or engulfing fog the mountains disappear altogether.

Perhaps it is the spirits of the dinosaurs at play. In the summer you can get acquainted with their geological remains – or at least the rocks known as Serpentine, which look very much like lizard scales, and crumble into yellow powder when touched too roughly. There are also local tales of horses and Newfoundland ponies who perished because their owners failed to build them shelters, expecting them to instinctively find a place to hide from the cold and wind like the moose and caribou. Perhaps it was because they drank from a stream too full of minerals or nibbled on a plant too strong of poison.

Only hikers and wild animals dot these hills now. They seem empty, except for the rivers; those are off limits to fishing, however. Gros Morne National Park has made it a UNESCO World Heritage site and it draws people from all over the globe. No photograph can do it justice. It is a spectacle you must breathe in, touch with your hands and see with your own eyes. To say it is valuable and remarkable merely because the earth’s mantle rises up through the ground here, is to understate the magnificence of this corridor between mountains.

What Motivates YOU? Qu’est-ce qui vous motive?

Goals. Its interesting how the term is different in business than in sports. To score a goal in hockey is to successfully get the puck into the net. In business the goal must be accomplished; a goal is an elusive thing that must be defined and worked upon before it can be achieved. A hockey player can assess a shot, avoid or overcome his opponents and make that shot in seconds. Goal. Amp up your business game. Be a player! #larp #battleforbusiness #sportminded #goaloriented #problemsolving #avikingbyhoof #LARPgrosmorne2020

Amp up votre jeu d’affaires. Soyez un joueur! #larp #résolutiondeproblèmes #sportd’esprit #avikingbyhoof #LARPgrosmorne2020

Giant or Mountain Troll?

Originally when I thought of designing trolls, I thought of tiny, misshapen creatures that seemed to be part of the earth itself. It was a given that they had large noses, hands and feet out of proportion with the rest of their pudgy bodies but other features such as hair was made of grass, moss or tree branches, that their skin could blend in with bark or rock and their clothing was meant to further this camouflage. So I had these ideas, from the beginnings based on illustrations from children’s stories and legends.

Doing some research I found that during great war events, where mountains were bombed, there were large figures that seemed to be a part of the mountains themselves, emerge and run across open fields and forests for cover. These were labelled mountain trolls. Big foot, sasquatch, mountain troll, giant? I hadn’t put trolls in this category before. But the fact that they remain hidden, content to blend, rather than take over, makes them less ominous than ones depicted in stories of their smaller selves.

Giants, on the other hand, were in my mind, always beings on a grand scale, but somehow also not quite human like. I pictured them with fangs, with horns, their hands and toes with claws instead of nails. The use of tree branches for limbs, rocks and grasses for hair and skin seemed a natural choice when drawing design.

Strength and giantism were obvious pairs. Did they eat people? Were ogres giants? Are giant mountain trolls giants? Were they beautiful? That’s where it gets tricky.

Scandinavian gods and goddesses seemed to have taken turns being both enemies and lovers of giants. Their offspring were forced to take sides when there were wars. Odin, Vili and Ve were sons of the giantess Bestla. Thor is son of Odin and the Giantess Jord. We get our idea that Vikings wore horned helmets from Thor’s comment mocking his brother Loki that soon women would be fashioning horns on their heads and wearing beards or men shaving their beards and trimming their horns.

Was the minotaur a giant? Is Stonehenge the remains of a giant castle? Were the Fomorians of Scotland the last of the Earth’s Giant race? Oh, yes, and how do you define Giant beauty? Let’s put that into perspective. What did the gods look like? The quick answer is “us”. But, when you describe someone especially beautiful, fit, attractive in a hypnotizing way that is beyond humanly possible, you get godlike. So if creatures that were the handsome vampires of the immortal world fell for giants, they surely must have been strikingly beautiful.

Elves and Fairies

Hi, this is Boss Mama and I’m presenting my Elf/Fairy dilemma for you to debate further. LARP season begins in May with our first annual FAIRY FUNDRAISER for the MAKE A WISH foundation. I set the date for MAY 1st, because it is FAIRY DAY, MAY DAY, Belfast, Celebration of Spring, etc. It seemed pertinent to making the event memorable.

Spring is NOT just for fairies though; winter is NOT only for elves. There are dominant forces from either clan in all seasons. We Midgardians (humans) lately, have leaned towards the feminization of fairies and association of warm temperatures to their presence; whilst elves have been stereotyped as tiny men in striped winter socks who spend their time crafting toys, slaves to a jolly, fat man who drives reindeer.

I honestly feel we have stolen the traditional clothing style of the Sami people and subjected it to our Christmas “fairy tales” of Santa Claus and his elves. For the Elves of our LARP events, I am going with the more serious, high tech, refined and not so sociable, godlike beings from Odin’s nine realm universe. Players can choose to be Light Elves or Dark Elves and their backstories can be canon or trivial.

Elves have their own language, which was written in Runic at the time of the Vikings. They also wrote things in their secret Elvish scrawl, that is similar to Hebrew writing. There is a debate about elves and angels. if you’ve read the Bible, you will notice all the angels names end in “el” . Some historians suggest that this is because prior to the Hebrew god Yaweh being worshipped, there was another god named El, who was quite popular for a very long time. As one religion took over from the former, the two merged and sons of El became sons or servants of God. Some folklorists believe that El is short for Elf and that a High Elf was originally worshipped as a god by humanity – the High One is another name for Odin the Allfather or could it be Alf Fadu?. Elf and Alf are often interchanged and Light Elves are from Alfheim.

But whether Buri, was a Light Elf who then married another Light Elf to produce Bor or married a Giant is not clear. Bor is attested to have married a giant named Bestla, who is the mother of Odin, Vili and Ve. So even if our gods were part Elf, they were also part Giant. And since they created humans in their image, it isn’t a stretch that there could be an intermingling of Elf and Midgardian.

“and the sons of god saw that the daughters of Man were fair and they went down to them and begat children. They were giants in the earth then.” Take Man to be Manheim and the revelation that Giants existed on the planet and that giant women were beautiful enough to seduce Elvish males, Vanir or Angels…depending upon your understanding of the matter.

What of the fairies? Aside from Peter Pan, what do we know of fairies? Nature is linked to their emotions, they have a creative force power that can transform inanimate objects into living beings, they know magic, they are extremely emotional and of course, they have wings. Or do they? History will tell you that names that end in Fae, Fe, or Fer are short for fairy, that certain countries were ruled by fairy folk. The Vanir, or rivals of the Asir had similar features, abilities and also managed to stamp “van” at the beginning of many a last Scandinavian name.

Could Lucifer be a loose translation of Loki Fairy? That one opens a whole new kettle of fish. Stay with me for a moment, though. Both are smooth talkers, intelligent, attractive, jealous, power hungry, deceitful, change bringers, world destroyers, leaders, sons of god and brothers to a more favoured son….

But that brings us back around to the “are elves and fairies the same thing?” question. So I leave it up to you to decide.

Gingerbread Houses and Mistletoe

As Christmas approaches and people scramble to buy molasses, ginger, sugar and candies for their gingerbread houses, do the images of Hansel and Gretel pop into their minds? Two children with negligent parents, left to fend for themselves in the woods, following breadcrumbs that get eaten by birds….deceived by a delicious home made of candy canes with window panes of sugar glass, being kidnapped and almost eaten by a cannibalistic hermit….do they come to mind. No, but their adorable costumes do – the adorable German Hat and shorts with suspenders, knee socks and handknit sweater for Hansel; Gretal’s smocked dress and knitted stockings, neat braids and crisp white blouse. Society has just blurred over the whole creepy serial killer in the woods aspect of the story and turned it into a scene they like to recreate at Christmas time.

The same I suppose goes for filling the house with poinsettias, decking the halls with boughs of holly and kissing under the mistletoe. These plants are all deadly poisonous. Why are we celebrating the birthday of a Jewish God’s healer son with these items? Well, because Odin, The Allfather – not to be confused with Jesus’s Alfather – had a healer son too. He was a magnificently beautiful both in looks and heart, the Brad Pitt of the gods. This healer was adored by all living things and also the Goddess of Death, Hel. In order to have her man by her side, however, she caused him to die at the hands of one of his one brothers with the poison of the mistletoe. When his father went to rescue his son from her, he was greeted by Hel, who had prepared a great decorative banquet for him with holly boughs and poinsettias.

Are we celebrating Death’s hold on our beloved Healer King? Are we celebrating the Light being with the Darkness? It is an interesting part of both North American and Northern European culture, particularly if you notice a lot of “Scandinavian Christmas” decorations include golden pears and pale blue items for the table and tree. Could the golden apples of Idun really have been pears? Have we been searching for eternal life and vitality on the wrong fruit tree? And as for the blue, it is not only peaceful like the winter sky, but the color of Baldur’s cross on his shield.

The Fabricated Newfie/Le Newfie fabriqué

Have you ever watched a science fiction, fairy tale or historical film that just seemed … well…fake? Was it the directing? The acting? Were the props and settings unbelievable? Or was it the costumes?

Bien… Faux? C’était la mise en scène ? Le jeu ? Les accessoires et les réglages étaient-ils incroyables ? Ou était-ce les costumes ?

Remember the horrid Batman movies prior to Dark Knight. I know you probably don’t want to, even some of the actors who starred in them have commented on the ridiculous attire they had to don for their roles. George Clooney’s batsuit above had nipples and fake muscles. It’s almost as thought someone forgot to read the entire Batman back story…he is NOT transformed into a muscular superhero by donning a bat eared mask or being provoked by bad guys. He is THE SAME man he is during daylight, SAME SIZE, SAME ABILITIES. He needs gadgets and expensive automobiles remember?

No, Batman did not gain any credibility in the movie form until Christian Bale and Heath Ledger hit the big screen in The Dark Knight. That costume person was wickedly gifted! Lindy Hemming took time to understand what the director’s vision for the movie was. She interpreted the script and created a Batman and Joker that felt genuine, through the clothes they wore.

Competition is healthy. It makes us better, stronger, smarter, quicker. It’s only natural for you to want to be THE most awesome looking Viking at our LARP Gros Morne 2020 event. We totally encourage it! In fact, the more time folks take in really developing their characters, their images, their chosen attire and weaponry, the better that photo shoot of you all battling on the beach or on a mountain trail will be.

Indigenous Viking?

As Ancestry keeps reworking their DNA analysis of people to tbe point where tbey are afraid to link potential Native American tribes to people’s profiles out of embarassingly pulling. Beothuk North Carolinian.

I will play devil’s advocate here for a moment. Why couldnt the North Carolinian woman have Beothuk DNA? What if Viking travellers had Beothuk crewmembers aboard who left them to stay in North Carolina?

Love draws people to new places all the time. This or these men/women may have been there long enough to forge relationships, preferred the climate, got along with tribe members of that area and decided not to go back to sea.

What are your theories?

To quote Peter Pan “I do believe in fairies, I do, I do!” The child in all of us believes. Legends tell us that fairies used to be out in the open amongst midgardians (humans). Nowadays when people discover fairies they quickly deny making such claims a short period later. I immediately think of the movie ET and American scientists closing in on the harmless little alien. Why, in 2019 on the verge of 2020, are our fairies in hiding?
